Archelogists have found a 500 year old “travel” candle in a glacier in Norway. This pine wooden box, with the lid still on, was made about 400-500 years ago. And when the Museum of Cultural History in Oslo opened it…they found beeswax. Very likely the remains of a beeswax candle.
Such candle boxes were used in Norway for transporting candles between the home farm and the summer pastures. Now the Glacier Archaeology Program team know that such candle boxes were used way back in time as people passed through the Lendbreen pass.
